Thomas Jackson and Alice Crompton History

THOMAS JACKSON was born September 13, 1823 at Blackley, Lancashire, England. He was the son of John Jackson and Susannah Grundy. His first wife was Alice Crompton. On January 9, 1855, he sailed on the Ship "Neva" from Liverpool, England for America and landed in New Orleans February 22, 1855. After a long and full life, he passed away on September 14, 1883. He was buried in the Glenwood, Utah Cemetery.

Perry Jackson's Intrepid Ancestors

Perry LeRoy Jackson's ancestors have been traced back to 390 B.C. to the Celts. His lineage includes notables such as William the Conqueror and other Scandinavian, European, Spanish, and Roman royalty. However, Perry identified most with the common man.

Genealogy and Family History: Helpful Hints:

Make it fun!
Examine your talents and interests to make your personal or family history a fun project. Do you scrapbook or are you good with the computer and graphic programs? Your history should tell your story, not only with the words, but how it is presented. Compiling a life history might be a way to develop new talents! If you enjoy compiling a history it will be reflected in your writing.

Where to Start?
Start close to home and save time by not duplicating effort. Gather information and photographs from your family and friends. Contact family members to see who has what and who has already done research. Search the web for family organizations. Look through old letters for dates, information and detail that might trigger your memory of events.

Organizing mementos
Obtain a few dozen manila folders and something to store them in such as a file cabinet or even a box. Sort through your material by putting the items in separate folders, organizing them by types. Label the folders with appropriate titles such as: announcements, awards, cards, certificates, church activity, education letters, military service records, medical history, miscellaneous, newspaper or other periodical clippings, occupations, official records, programs, vacations. Write explanations of the events and personal feelings associated with some the most important items you want included in your history.

Photographs
Sort your photographs and write on the back dates, places and people. If you do not know someone in a photograph (this pertains especially to ancestors in old photographs) ask people you know to help identify them. Visit and take photographs of places, people and things that pertain to your life to add interest to your story, for example: homes, church building, schools, place where you were born, favorite places, pets and automobiles.

Describe Yourself Using Objects
This exercise is more than describing the color of your eyes, hair and size. Make a list of the most important common objects you use or associate with in you daily life such as an appliance, collictable, computer or other electronic devise, musical instrument, tools, style of clothing, sport or recreation item, toys, or favorite recipes. Write about the role of each object in your life. Also make a list of favorite books or other reading material and types of music you have enjoyed. Describe the impact some of them have made in your life, including significant dates. Remember that something that seem mundane to you will be a treasure to your posterity.

Medical History
Describe your general health, blood type, illnesses, accidents, treatment, hospital experiences and medications. This will be interesting to your descendants and possibly some fact will be crucial in one of their lives.

Types of Personal Histories
A personal history can be written in several ways; chronological, topical or thematic.
1. Chronological histories lists events divided into several major life periods; early childhood, adolescence, early adult, later adulthood and retirement.
2. Topical histories discuss major kinds of events in your life and arranged in the order you desire.
3. Thematic histories revolve around a major theme, a special talent, chosen profession, mission in life, recurring events, core beliefs or guiding principles. One or two of these themes can serve to unify the recurring ideas that most of the significant events of your life are shaped. This type works well to describe a life of service, politics, music or art.
A combination of these three types of histories can make interesting reading.

Types of Questions that Help Capture an Experience

6. Why?
To make answers to above questions more meaningful, write discriptions on how the experience stimulated a person's senses. Talk about fragrances, tastes, color, sounds etc.

Oral Histories, A Great Way to Perserve Memories
Many People will not write their life stories because they do not think they write well. The easiest way to preserve memories is to talk on a recorder while someone ask questions. See my October 28, 2008 Blog, "What to Ask? What to Ask?" on themy blog posts for a list of questions.

Three advantages of oral history
Easy: Writing is hard work. Talking can be pleasant. A person can concentrate on remembering experiences instead of worrying about punctuation, spelling, etc.
Fuller: Oral history gives a fuller account than does writing. In a conversation, colorful episodes, small trivialities and better descriptions are told that rarely get into written histories. Time spent talking produces much more than the same time used making a written record.
Richer: Along with the person’s history, voice, personality and emotions are preserved
